The HSI opened 28 points or 0.1% lower at 24,744. The HECEI dipped 12 points or 0.1% to 8,870. The HSTECH dropped 5 points or 0.1% to 5,447.

In the tech sector, BABA-W (09988.HK) opened rallying 1.8% at HKD117.8, TENCENT (00700.HK) inched 0.3% higher to HKD551.5. MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) and NTES-S (09999.HK) edged down 0.4% and 1.5%, respectively. JD-SW (09618.HK) remained flat at HKD122.9. BILIBILI-W (09626.HK) added 0.4%. BIDU-SW (09888.HK) and KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK) gained 1% and 1.3%. SMIC (00981.HK) stayed flat at HKD51.1. KINGDEE INT'L (00268.HK) rallied 2.3%.

Car maker NIO-SW (09866.HK) rocketed 8.8% to HKD37.85 at open. The Onvo L90 is priced from RMB265,800, and the six-seat version has begun delivery. Citi considered the L90's pricing very attractive, predicting its monthly deliveries to be 6,000-7,000 units at first and soon reach over 10,000 units.

Meanwhile, GEELY AUTO (00175.HK) and XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) opened down 0.3% and 0.7%, respectively. Xiaomi Auto is planning to add 18 new stores this month. BYD COMPANY (01211.HK) and LI AUTO-W (02015.HK) also lost 1.1% and 1.5%. In contrast, XPENG-W (09868.HK) rose 0.3%. It delivered 36,700 smart electric vehicles in July, setting a new record.

SINOPEC CORP (00386.HK) opened sinking 2.4% at HKD4.49. It estimated its interim net profit to fall 39.5-43.7% YoY.
